Below is the Athletic Summer Workout Plan adapted and approved for Band.  I would imagine some of these items will be strengthened and/or relaxed as things continue to change.  The following will be in effect for all summer band activities until further notice.  Please read carefully so you will come prepared for band rehearsals and auditions.  Medical forms will be sent soon.

  • All summer activities are voluntary.
    • No one is forcing students to participate in band.
    • If you choose to participate in band, it is a 3-trimester class.
    • A remote learning option will be available to those interested.
    • Students enrolled in remote learning will not perform with the band.
      • Students enrolled in remote learning will follow a parallel track of assignments as those students in class.  Assignments will usually be one memorized quiz per week.   Unfortunately, there isn’t a feasible path for a remote learning student to be prepared to perform live with the band.  The drill charts, counts and spacing are all learned together as a team within the actual physical space of the field.
  • Only participants and essential personnel will be with the band
    • Essential Personnel – Teachers, instructors, approved volunteers.
  • Parents nor spectators may attend rehearsals.
    • Parent my drop-off students and leave campus.
    • Parent questions are best delivered through email. Please do not enter the building.
  • Participants must submit all medical forms required.
  • Locker rooms will not be used.
    • N/A for band.
  • Restrooms in the music hall will be available for musicians during practice.
  • Report to practice in proper clean gear. DO NOT bring backpacks or other non-essential items.
  • NorthWood will not launder practice clothes for athletes.
    • N/A for band.
  • Musicians are expected to leave the school facility and return home at the conclusion of each activity.
  • Musicians are expected to shower at home immediately after practice.
  • Musicians are limited to 15 hours of school sponsored activities a week. (through July 19)
  • Coaches will disinfect any equipment used after each practice.
    • Shared percussion equipment will be disinfected daily.
    • School issued instruments become the responsibility of the student receiving them. School instruments issued to a specific student will not be shared.
    • Colorguard may not share equipment…see B above.
    • Props – We will not have props until after this plan expires or is renewed on or around July 19.
  • NorthWood will provide hand sanitizing stations.
  • There will be no traveling nor competitions during July.
  • Musicians will bring their own water and water bottles to each rehearsal. As always, DO NOT SHARE!
  • Due to Elkhart County’s mandated mask order, all participants are required to wear a mask unless performing vigorous physical activity or playing a wind instrument. The flute section is welcome to wear face shields when playing.  Flutes will have additional distancing when indoors.  NorthWood Athletics will have masks available for $7.
  • “All physical contact is to be avoided if possible, during Phase 1. Social distancing will be monitored during practices for athletes not directly involved with a drill.”
    • Musicians won’t touch each other.
  • Parents and musicians should self-screen before coming to school. Those showing symptoms of COVID19 without being otherwise explained should email Mr. Criss and stay home.
  • COVID-19 symptoms: fever (at or above 100.4), cough, difficulty breathing, chills, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, recent loss of taste or smell. Be cautious with your self-screening.
  • Musicians who have had close contact with a person who has tested positive with COVID-19 are to stay home. Please communicate with the band/athletic/main office in the event a positive test has been determined.
  • All student participants and essential personnel will be required to take attendance in a group that they are assigned by the head coach, director, and/or sponsor. During this attendance time each student participant including the coach, director, or sponsor will answer five questions pertaining to symptoms of COVID-19. If at any point a musician or coach, director, or sponsor answer yes to these questions they will report to Mr. Widner for further evaluation. Widner will then take a temperature and determine if the student or adult should be sent home.  Daily attendance records must be kept to share with the Elkhart Health Department upon request and submitted daily by Mr. Criss to Mr. Widner.
