Frequently Asked Questions About 6th Grade Band:

When does band meet?
All NorthWood Middle School bands meet during the school day as a regular daily class.

Will band conflict with sports or other activities?
NO! Middle School bands have 3-4 concerts each year. These are the only commitments for middle school band outside the school day. Most band students are also involved with multiple sports and after school activities.

Is there homework?
The only regular homework for band is practicing your instrument. Each band student must practice his/her instrument on their own. There are occasional graded practice assignments.

Do I get a grade for band?
Yes. Because band is a regular class during the school day, students receive grades like any other class based on participation, weekly practicing, etc.

How much does it cost?
This is a very hard question to answer. Every student must have their own instrument to practice with at home. Some students already have an instrument from a family member or friend. Most students rent instruments during their middle school years. Some will just go buy one. Each instrument has different costs. Please don’t let this be a deterring factor for your child to join band. I work hard with every family to make sure each student that wants to join band has the opportunity to do so. Please consult Miss Bradley before buying an instrument to make sure it is of good quality. Students are only able to fully succeed if they have quality instruments to play.

If I rent an instrument, when do I pay? When do I get it?
On Monday, March 24th you can sign up for an instrument rental. The cost for the starter pack to start the instrument rental is $45.96. If you can’t come that night, just contact Miss Bradley. We strongly encourage parents pay the rental fee at this time. All rented instruments will be delivered to the high school band room for Beginning Summer Band! Those who do not attend that, your instrument will be at the middle school the first week of school.

Can students take their instruments on the bus?
Yes! Almost all instruments are easily taken back and forth on the bus. For larger instruments, like tuba, the student has one at home to practice with and one at school for class.

How do we sign up for band class?
If you sign up for an instrument on the Paige’s website, there is nothing else you need to do.  You can also contact Miss Bradley, and you will automatically be put into the 6th Grade Band class for next school year.  It is never too late to join band!

Step-Up Rental Information

Why step-up?

The instrument that your child started on in 6th grade is a beginner instrument and is not really intended to be their forever instrument.  Step up instruments are built to provide better tone, quicker key mechanisms and sometimes additional keys to extend the range of the instrument. As the students progress through the NorthWood Band program, these features will help students to develop into a better and stronger musicians.

You  will likely even see your child practice more, start to develop a stronger sense of commitment to their instrument and the band program. It really is amazing to watch the growth of these young musicians with the higher performing instruments!

We continue to work with Paige’s Music in offering this plan to help you in this process. The link above provides details on step up instruments as well as instructions on how to try out a step-up instrument. It is completely free to try one out, and it can be delivered at school next week!  If you are already renting from Paige’s, your rental payments will apply towards this step up instrument.  However, you do not have to be currently renting from Paige’s to take advantage of this program.
